In the spring of 2020, a small and determined group of Tai Chi players came together in south Durham. We wore masks, stood far apart, and practiced outdoors, at first in the pine trees and later, by a picturesque pond. On several occasions an unfamiliar bird appeared on a tree branch near the practice area. While one member took photos, another consulted an ornithology app and quickly identified it as a green heron: Butorides virescens. It became our mascot. The url was available and Green Heron
Tai Chi was born. The heron brings deep multicultural symbolism: calm, patience, and determination. Heron asks us to ground ourselves in the earth while looking carefully for what will sustain us spiritually. As in the martial arts, the heron will strike only when the moment is right and needed for survival. In the Celtic tradition, the heron is the reincarnation of Rhiannan, the goddess of waters and or lady of lakes. Heron also symbolizes autonomy, wisdom, and good judgement: traits we seek to cultivate along with Qi, or bioelectric energy, as we practice Qigong and Tai Chi. And lastly, heron teaches us how to become more comfortable in uncertain situations: 2020 has put us all to this test. Our intention is to maintain balance and stability as well as safety, connection, and good health now and in the future.
